Win a 1.4kg Nutri Peck Block

Win a 1.4 kg pecking block for chickens

Your chickens will love pecking at the mixed grains and seeds that make up this pecking block.

This can be a solution to problems with aggressive hens and often reduces fighting within the flock by providing a distraction.  Even without problematic hen pecking, this will help provide an enriched environment for your hens.

The Newent Chicken Coop

Introducing The Newent Chicken Coop

Our new Newent Chicken coop and run is the ideal choice for keeping a few hens in the back garden and combines sleeping quarters, nest box and a run.

The basic coop and run will acaccommodate 3 average laying hens although with the addition of the optional run extension, or if the hens are allowed to free range for most of the time 6 will happily roost in the coop.

The coop and run can be easily lifted by 2 people or with the addition of the wheel kit 1 person will be able to reposition the coop and run.

Like all our housing, the coop and run is built from pressure treated timber to ensure a long life and the mesh is our usual, top quality European weldmesh.  Our houses all have a 5 year guarantee.

The roof is corrugated bitumen sheeting which will minimise the chance Red mite finding a home.

The run includes day perches so the birds can rest off the ground during the day. A ladder enables them to reach the roosting area and nest box.

Access to the nest box and roosting area is via a hinged door on the rear of the coop.

The pophole is a vertical sliding type so compatable with the VSB and ASTi ranges of door openers

Overall size is 180cm long, 125 cm wide and 140cm tall.

Win 5KG Smite anti mite powder

Win a 5kg bucket of smite mite powder.

smite-mite-powder-5kg-300[1]

As the winter has been quite mild this year we’d expect red mite to be a major problem as the weather warms up.  Here’s a chance to win a bucket of Smite mite powder in readiness.

Smite Organic Powder is an organic, naturally-mined, mineral product made up of fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae. When crushed to a fine powder it feels similar to chalk powder to the touch, but when viewed under a microscope the fine particles resemble shards of broken glass! It is this ‘broken glass’ effect which is deadly to any insect, but harmless to animals, fish, fowl, food and humans.

All you need to do is let us have your email address.  Entries close at midnight, 9/2/2014 The winner will be chosen at random and notified by email. The draw is limited to UK only.  By entering you are agreeing to recive marketing email from us (approx 6/year).  You can opt out at any time but you must be subscribed when the draw is drawn to be included.

Avian Influenza / Bird Flu

How will an outbreak of bird flu affect domestic poultry keepers in the UK?

With outbreaks of bird flu reported in Asia now is a good time as any to check how you would deal with an outbreak in the UK.

Firstly, it’s important to protect yourselves and your family – most people that are regularly in contact with poultry are entitled to a flu jab at the doctors.

Next, you need a plan on how to isolate your birds from contact with outside birds should you be told to do so.  The alternative would be to slaughter and dispose of your flock.

You’ll need to fully enclose your hens so that wild birds can’t access them.  This could be inside a shed or garage for a short time but should the outbreak be extended it might not be the best long term solution.  It’s suggested that any mesh should have holes smaller than 25mm.  We’d suggest 12x25mm mesh as suitable to prevent access for all common wild birds.  You’ll need a roof that will stop droppings landing inside the run.  Open mesh isn’t suitable as any droppings will pass through although it could be covered with a tarpaulin as a temporary measure.  We’d suggest a corrugated roofed run as being the most suitable.

You’ll need to ensure any disease isn’t spread but keeping everything as clean as possible. Vehicles and footwear should be disinfected if you travel between different groups of birds. Any equipment should be cleaned before disposal or moving to a new location.  Our Bi-oo-Cyst disinfectant is suitable for controlling all poultry diseases both as a spray or a vehicle/foot bath
