Large Chicken Coop with walk-in run plus extended run.

9×15′ Walk In chicken Coop and Run with extended run

house

This installation is based on one of our 9×15′ walk in chicken coop and runs with a 3 sided mesh roof run attached to the side to double the floor area.  We also supplied one of our Monmouth Minor Chicken Coops as there would also be some ducks sharing the run – you can see their pond inside the run.  There are 2 pop holes between the 2 halfs of the run so it can be split into separate areas if needed.  The main house and run features a 12″ base plinth to contain litter in the base whilst the extension has a 6″ plinth.  This enable it to fit under the edge of the main roof.

Here you’ll get an idea of the building process.  This job  of us about 6 hour to assemble although 2 hours of that was spent carrying it all to the end of the very long garden.

And here’s a quick look inside:

Here we are having finished.  Time to drive home now.

Frost Free Chicken Drinkers this Winter

Winter means frozen chicken drinkers

But with one of our electric heaters for chicken drinkers this isn’t a problem as long as you have a mains electric supply within a few meters of your house.

We offer 2 plate type heaters of either 20 or 30cm diameter.

These electric drinker heaters sit under your plastic or metal chicken drinker and gently warm the water preventing it from freezing.

Electric Drinker Heater in either 20 or 30cm diameter.

The plate has adjustable lugs to secure the drinker and a long lead to the low voltage plug in adaptor.  The plate provides gentle heat at the base of the drinker and causes the water inside the drinker you flow due to the thermal currents created within  the drinker.

If you are using a tripod type drinker you can also have heating via this simple heating element.  Simply push half up the spout and leave the other half in the dish will help keep water flowing through the winter.  Again this is supplied with a long lead to the low volatge adaptor.

Low Voltage heating element for Chicken drinkers can be used with all types of chciken drinekrs

Our policy on giving to charities

Our policy on giving to charities.

We regularly get asked to donate to charities but as there are just too many for us to help everyone we need you to supply us with a little more information about your organisation and how we can work together.

Most of the organisations we work with are animal based although we welcome requests from others.

Most of our donations are in the form of goods, often in the form of prizes although some charities also receive regular cash payments where that is more appropriate.  We also have items with cosmetic damage that we can often donate.

At the end of the day, we have to look at this from a commercial point of view – How will our donation increase the number of people that are aware of what we do?

We’d like you to be able to tell us how you will let people know that we have supported your cause and approximately how many this will reach.

As a web based retailer our primary target is to increase our reach via the internet which could include your own website, facebook pages, twitter account etc.

This is a prize we are suppling to Fresh Start For Hens

This is a prize we are supplying to Fresh Start For Hens

Currently we are supporting:

Several groups rehoming ex-commercial chickens: Little Hen Rescue, Fresh Start for Hens and Homes4Hens.

A kids football team

Several animal shelters that make use of cosmetically damaged heat lamps.

How to make a nest box for your chickens

It’s quite easy to make a simple to nest box for your chickens.

This one can be used on the floor or hung from the wall.

We find that around nests 10″ wide is suitable for most laying hens.  For large hens the dimensions can be changed.  This example gives nest boxes approx. 11 1/2″ wide

We use this basic nest in our large chicken house and run

Where we show you how to build a simple, plywood nest box for your chickens. You'll need some 9mm plywood and some 12 square timber - 1" timber is normally finished to around 20mm. The top and bottom of the nest box are made from 36x12" peices of plywood. There are 4 vertical dividers made from 12x12" plywood. along the front of the nest box is a strip of ply, 36x2 3/4" to contain the bedding. There is one of these front and rear. We suggest screwing it all together with 25mmx3.5 screws.

How to Slaughter Chicken Training Course

At sometime in your chicken keeping you’ll have a bird that needs to be culled, either because it is ill, injured or you may have decided to raise your own meat birds.  Whilst many home poultry keepers will make use of a local vet for the occasional bird that is beyond hope, if you keep a number of birds or wish to raise a few meat birds, slaughtering chickens is a job you really need to be able to do yourself especially as the rules governing mobile slaughter houses has recently changed.

We’d like to introduce you to Lewis Wescott who runs poultry keeping training courses, including one on how to dispatch, pluck and gut your own chickens.  This course is targeted at people wishing to prepare their own chickens for their own use and doesn’t cover commercial production.

I run courses on Chicken Keeping for Beginners and more Advance courses; everything you need to know when starting out with chickens, covering everything from housing to handling.
I recently spent a week at the BBC Gardeners World Live show promoting keeping poultry and had a great time with some of my Pekin bantams giving ‘Chicken Keeping for Beginners’ talks at the show and in the VIP lounge.

Having worked with poultry for many years I am often asked for help dispatching cockerels or ill birds for people and so thought we could run an educational course.
The first course in Wales went so well we have found a working smallholding to run a weekend of courses from; near Aberystwyth in West Wales atop of a mountain, the views have to be seen to believed!
I myself attended a similar course 4 years ago and have worked on a Free Range Turkey processing farm for the run up to Christmas.
As a recent Animal Science graduate I have learnt all about where our food comes from and have seen a massive increase in the numbers of people striving towards self sufficiency. With increasing numbers of people hatching chicks, I feel it is only responsible to learn how to humanely dispatch cockerels, especially dual purpose breeds whose cockerels can e raised for the table.
Courses are held in small groups of 6-8 people and ran in a friendly manner using the humane and efficient broomstick method of dispatch. You will be taught to pluck this bird which is then taken home to finish preparing later to reinforce what you have learnt on the day.
You will be given a previously dispatched and plucked bird to learn how to gut and prepare for the table, in a newly renovated kitchen workshop – this is also taken home for you to later cook and enjoy.
After the course we are offering an evening BBQ and camping to make the day into a social weekend!
Cook your newly processed bird on our brand new rotisserie BBQ and enjoy the coastal views surrounded by rare breed goats, sheep, ponies llamas and poultry, or spend time and relax in the Tavern!
The cost of the course is £75 per person to include 2 meat birds, course notes, goody bags and optional camping.

You'll learn how to slaught, pluck, and prepare your chicken to be cooked.

You’ll learn how to prepare your chicken
