POULTRY SUPPLIES | Red Mite, Louse and Scaly Leg Treatments

How do you treat red mite in your chicken house?

It's almost impossible to prevent red mite in chickens as they exist in the wild bird population but there are a few steps to take to minimise the impact they can have.
Red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae), not to be confused with red spider mite( Tetranychus urticae) that live on plants, hide in small, dark spaces so removing these is the first task. Roofing felt against a flat timber surface is a favourite place, replacing with corroline greatly reduces the places they can hide and gives good access to those hiding places for later treatment.
Red mite will also live in piles of debris so wherever possible keep these to a minimum. So a good cleaning programme will help. Poultry Shield and Smite are both leading cleaning products for chicken houses. Not only do they clean the house but they will also "clean" the red mites, dissolving their outer waxy coating causing them to die. Diatom is the next step. Sprinkle this around the edges of the house, in the nest box and in any dust bath they use. Whilst it'll have no effect on you or your chickens, to a mite it's like walking on broken glass causing them to shrivel up and die. You can also use this directly on the birds. If you prefer a more natural treatment the Barrier Red Mite Powders and liquids are made of natural substances and if used correctly will deter mite investations
